Classroom Materials

The publisher has produced a free Teaching Guide (PDF, 312k) to help you apply the material in Chicago History for Kids to classroom activities.

In- Class Presentations

The author is available to conduct in-class presentations to students on a variety of topics, such as:

  • The Origins of Chicago (From Prehistory to 1871)
  • The Great Chicago Fire (1871 to 1893)
  • Child Labor in Chicago
  • The Civil War in Chicago
  • The Home Front (Chicago During the World Wars)
  • The Great Migration (1916-1970)
  • City of Immigrants
  • Chicago Mayhem (Tragedies, Catastrophes, and Riots)
  • Transportation, Industry, and the Growth of a Metropolis
  • Civil Rights in Chicago

Customized presentations can also be developed. For example, I once did a presentation on George Pullman's contributions to Chicago as part of a class field trip to the Pullman neighborhood and museum.

I've also used a mock quiz show format in which kids compete for small prizes (or just the thrill of victory) by answering questions on Chicago history.

To discuss topics and schedule a date, please send us an e-mail.
